Ensuring quality clinical educators is an important component of the education process for future SLPs. There are a few requirements that supervisors must meet, and these are enforced by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. The requirements are the same for student clinicians or clinical fellows (the first-year post-masters degree mentored experience).
The requirements are listed here:
1) Have competency in any area of practice in which they supervise.
2) Hold current ASHA certification (certificate of clinical competence)
3) Have a minimun of 9 months expereince after earing tthe certificate of clincical competence
4) Complete a minimum of 2 hours of professional development (PD) in the area of clinical instruction/supervision.
Check here to see if you meet the requirements! If you are needing the 2 hours PD, contact a local SLP program and ask about courses through CAPCSD. Or you can complete PD opportunities from places like the ASHA learning pass, speechpathology.com, medbridge.com, your state association, or conferences.
