There are many pros and cons to using artificial intelligence. However, it is here to stay. I have grown up with the ability to "just google it." I imagine the AI infrastructure is as revolutionary to some as learning about the internet and Google. For me, I think it has the ability to drastically improve our workloads- which we know are all soaring. Here are some ways that I use AI ethically to improve my workload.
1). Ask questions. Sometimes I have a really complex question that I can't even adequately articulate. Asking ChatGPT gives me the background info to refine a question and dig out the important pieces of information I am missing.
2). Develop case studies. With appropriate attribution that a case was developed using AI, I use this to quickly differentiate learning through case studies.
3). Create therapy materials. Are you stuck thinking of CVCVC words that begin with a certain phoneme? Why spend your previous cognitive resources when a list can be generated for you!
4). Generate scripts. If you are working with individuals on sequencing, conversational scripts, or social communication, developing scripts is as easy as asking ChatGPT to "develop a script for ordering at a restaurant."
There are a million other ways that SLPs can use ChatGPT to alleviate cognitive overload, but it is important to use it ethically and responsibly. At the end of the day, we are in a clinical profession that requires individualized therapy and critical thinking so all information must be checked for accuracy and personalized to the situation.
